Getting in the spirit of the Halloween season, I have been watching the movies to come out of Showtime’s Masters of Horror television series. So far, I have been pretty impressed with the quality of the movies. They tell some good stories in the space of each one hour episodes. They pack a lot into a little time. Masters of Horror harkens back to The Twilight Zone/ Outer Limits/ Tales From The Crypt anthology shows.

The first one that I watched is Deer Woman by John Landis based off a script written by his son. It tales the tale of a damaged police detective (Brian Benben) who is called in on a series of murders where all the victims appear to have been trampled to death after being seen in the company of a very sexy American Indian woman (Cinthia Moura), he tracks the killer and finds more than he bargins for. Equal parts horror & humor, this film is a good intro to the series. Cinthia Moura is absolutely stunning in this movie, I hope she becomes a big star in Hollywood.

The second one that I watched is Incident On And Off A Mountain Road. It is an adaption of a Joe Lansdale story by Don Coscarelli of Phantasm fame. It tells the tale of a woman driving in the mountains on a dark country night. She comes around a curve in the road, only to come face to face with a stopped car. she swerves but barrels into it. She goes to check on it, only to come face to face with a serial killer by the name of Moonface. She tries to escape from him into the woods, but eventually is captured. She is taken back to his shack, and it looks like the worst. How and why she turns the tables on him is a great twist ending worthy on M. Night.

The third and final one that I have got to watch so far is Stuart Gordon’s adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s Dreams in the Witch House. Stuart Gordon’s contribution to M.O.H. is one of his continuing efforts to bring HPL to the Movie-going masses. After his work with Re-Animator, From Beyond & Dagon, he turns to one of HPL’s more famous short stories. The visuals on this one are pretty good.
If this series rolls on at this level, I might actually have to add Showtime to my channels……
A Rose(lyn) By Any Other Name….

I recently read the first issue of Ed Brubaker & Sean Philips Marvel/Icon comic series CRIMINAL. It was a pretty good setup issue to show us the world it is set in. It follows the lives of well, criminals….
It looks to be along the lines of Sin City- an unamed city where criminals ply their trade, where violence is quick and easy, and the focus shifts with the story. I like that. We need more crime stories on the shelves and especially when superior writers such as Ed write them.
It is a creator-owned series so there’s no telling what will happen to the characters and that’s part of the charm of it.
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Legion Of Super Heroes. They were one of my favorite comic book teams back when I was little during their heyday. They were a great combo of superheroes laced with sci-fi and sprinkeled with the Superman Family. I dug them beyond all compare.
So I was psyched when I heard that they were finally getting their own cartoon series on the WB. They had so many characters and history that they could be a great long running series. They could be a semi-continuation of JLU…..
I was a little wary at first when I heard they were going the semi-anime format. Because apparently nowadays it’s a law that every cartoon has to be anime-esque. But luckily, Legion follows Teen Titans rather than every other crappy faux anime series.
I have only watched two episodes so far but they were great episodes. I have faith that they are going to continue in that vein. I particularly liked that they did connnect it firmly to the Superman Mythos where it started out and belongs.
Check it out some Saturday Morning…..

Everybody Gotta Have A Dream….
I finally got around to watching Hustle & Flow last night. It is a great little movie about the life of a small-timer pimp from Memphis named Djay (masterfully played by Terrance Howard) as he tries to make it as a rapper and get out of the life.
He has watched his life go by, slowly dying inside as he watches another rapper named Skinny Black (Ludacriss) who came from his hometown blow up while he sinks into despair. He tries to turn his life around through music and struggles with his dream.
This movie really speaks to the idea of having a dream and having to make it come true because your backs against the wall.
It was written/directed by Craig Brewer, a Memphis native who puts a truer version of the South & Memphis on in particular than you find on many of the “Southern” films that Hollywood foists on the public….
You scored as Human. You are a Human! The Humans of Stormwind are a resilient breed, having survived an invasion by the savage Orcs during the First War. During the Second War, the armies of Stormwind rallied with the Alliance to reclaim their homeland of Azeroth. After the success of the Second War, Stormwind was rebuilt and Human civilization began to flourish once again throughout the southlands. With the recent invasion of the Burning Legion – which left the northern kingdom of Lordaeron in ruins – Stormwind now stands as the last bastion of human civilization. Following the heroic examples of the legendary Sir Lothar and King Llane, the defenders of Stormwind are considered to be among the fiercest warriors in the land. They stand resolute in their charge to maintain the honor and might of humanity in an ever-darkening world.
