London Bridge Is Falling Down, Falling Down…

Everybody go out and pick up the new Union Jack limited series from Marvel. It is spinning out of his recent guest appearance in Captain America. It is written by Christos Gage of TV’s Law & Order fame. He is setting up a great story here with UJ having to stop terrorists from causing attacks on London. He has to wrangle up a team of allies on short notice which causes for some stange bedfellows with The Countess Val (from S.H.I.E.L.D), Sabra and a brand new Arabian Knight. The first issue is already out and it kicks butt.

You Really Are Good & Numb, Aren’t You?

Hard Candy is a film that has that punch in the face quality that you find in much of Andrew Vachss’s noir novels. Now this story wasn’t written by him, but it very well could have been.

The film opens with a IM conversation between a 14-year-old girl and a grown man. They meet in a coffee shop and they go back to his place. The story looks like it is leading into every parent’s nightmare scenario about what could happen to their daughters.

But then it takes a hard right turn, where we find out that the pedophile is the one who is really in for it. Haley, the teenage girl played masterfully by 19-year old X-men III:The Last Stand cutie Ellen Page, drugs the man and then proceeds to interrogate him about what he has done, what he was going to do and what made him what he is.

This is a great film which will provoke many discussions about it. It went over big at Sundance. If Ellen’s performances continue at this level, then this is the breakthrough project heralding a major new talent on the scene.

Check this one out if you get the chance….

Pay Strict Attention To What I Say Because I Choose My Words Carefully…

Now, normally I’m not much for Spike Lee’s films (other than Malcolm X), but his bank heist film is a great little movie. It helps that he has Denzel Washington as the lead. Denzel plays the hostage negotiator who faces off against Clive Owen’s bank robbery crew. Both Denzel & Clive give great performances in this film. It is a true cat and mouse game between the two of them. It is a true guy’s film of the type that Hollywood rarely makes anymore. Check it out….

Hillary Swank Sure Didn’t Look Like A Boy In This Movie….

Hey Y’all,

This weekend the movie, The Black Dahlia, opens up in wide release. Whether or not it lives up to it’s potential is for other people to say, not me. But regardless of whether or not you like the movie, do yourself a favor and pick up the book that the movie is based on.

It is one of the best hard-boiled books that have came along in a long time. James Ellroy’s work and this book in particular are worthy heirs to Hammett, Chandler, and Cain. It is one of JE’s masterworks from his great L.A. Quartet series of novels, of which L.A. Confidential is also a part. Pick it up if you get a chance…

Luthor’s Lovely Lady Of The Week #15- Amanda Peet…

Hi Y’all,

This week’s LLLOTW is the impishly sexy Amanda Peet. She has a very big show debuting on TV tommorow, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. It is a take on the backstage drama at a SNL-type show. It is headlined by Aaron Sorkin, so you know it will be good. Amanda is a big part of that. She has the ability to be sexy and/or funny which is rare in modern day starlets these days.

Her movies include One Fine Day, Saving Silverman, The Whole Nine Yards/Ten Yards, Something’s Gotta Give, and Syriana. She looks to finally break out big in Studio 60, so be on the lookout for her & this show…..

So, Do You Trust Me Now, Brendan?

Hi Y’all,

The movie Brick is a near-perfect film noir. Or in this case, High School Noir. Take the slang and plot of a 1940’s film noir and set it among the environs and kids of the modern day high school setting.

It has all the classic elements of a great old hard-boiled tale. The Loner Antihero-Brendan, The Ex-Lover Murder Victim- Emily, The Femme Fatale- Laura, The Hophead- Dode, The Criminal Mastermind- The Pin, The Hired Muscle- Tugger, The Maneater- Kara. All the archetypes are here in the story.

And what a story it is.

The story opens with Brendan, a guy who has cut himself off from his friends after his old girlfriend broke up with him awhile back. He has become a loner who is isn’t interested in the high school goings on.

Until that is, he gets a mysterious note in his locker asking him to be at a phone booth to receive a call from the ex-girlfriend. He goes to the booth, where he gets a call from Emily. She has got herself in deep trouble and needs his help. She gets spooked and hangs up on him.

She disappears, which leads Brendan to dive into finding her to see if she is okay. When he eventually finds her murdered body, then its all about finding who put her in front of the gun.

He has to move into the rich drugged-out circles which she left him for. Which leads him to find out that Emily had got herself mixed up with the town’s drug kingpin and his missing brick of drugs.

Brendan gets himself in deep in order to find out what really happened to the only girl he has ever loved. He finally finds out the truth of what went on, but has to put things right.

Brick is a excellent little movie which came out of nowhere to win some awards at the Sundance Film Festival. It is a tightly plotted movie from a first time filmmaker.

It has many excellent performances in it, especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily De Ravin, & Nora Zehetner as Brendan, Emily and Laura, respectively. Their work in the movie really does power the movie from beginning to end.

Superman, Babe Ruth, & A Bat Named Darlin’…

Hi Y’all,

Everybody go out and see the new animated movie, Everyone’s Hero, this weekend if you get the chance. It was the last movie that Christopher Reeve and his wife worked on before their untimely passings. It follows the story of a boy whose father is the security guard for the Depression-era Yankees when Babe Ruth’s bat is stolen by one of the opposing teams players.(You know it would be one of the Chicago Cubs). The boy’s father is blamed for it, so the kid sets out to get the bat back and repair his father’s rep, in time for Babe’s famous Called Shot. It looks to be a cool little movie…..

So Do You Want To See The Real Man Of Steel, Lois?

I just got back a little while ago from seeing the new movie Hollywoodland about the life and death of George Reeves, the first actor to play Superman in a television series.

He is played in the movie by Ben Affleck. I heard a theory this weekend that Affleck is only as good as the material that he is given.

I don’t know if that is true or not, but in this movie he gives a great performance. He gives this recounting of Reeve’s life a real fundamental sense of sadness.

Reeve’s life was forever linked to Superman. He was an actor who although he got his first role in Gone With The Wind, was always seen by the public as Superman.

He was apparently very unhappy about being typecast. Affleck gives him a sense that he felt that he was made for more than just playing Man Of Steel.

He got involved in an affair with the wife(Dianne Lane/Toni Mannix) of one of the studio executives(Bob Hoskins/Eddie Mannix) and she basically kept him instead of helping him to break out of the typecasting.

This storyline intertwines with the mystery over his death. Was it a suicide? Did her husband have him killed? Did his new girlfriend(Robin Tunney/Leonore Lemmon) kill him in an argument after he told her that he wasn’t going to marry her?

The movie wisely doesn’t try to spin it any particular way, instead presenting all the ways that it could have happened and letting you come to your own conclusions about what happened here.

Hollywoodland is essentially two movies. The first is Reeve’s life and death. The second is headline-chasing, bottomfeeding P.I. Louis Simo(Adrian Brody), trying to uncover what really happened here.

Brody give his usual great performance here. He first takes this case just to make money and grab a few headlines, then thinking Reeve’s was killed, then ultimately not knowing just what had happened. Most who have seen the film have come to the same conclusion. Me included.

So if your in the mood for a good Chinatown-style whodunit this weekend, go have a look at this one…..

Luthor’s Lovely Lady Of The Week #14- Kelly Carlson…

In honor of my taking up watching Nip/Tuck, This week’s LLLOTW is N/T’s bombshell Kelly Carlson. She has had roles in the television series CSI, Everwood, & Nip/Tuck. Her movie roles include 3000 Miles To Graceland, Starship Troopers 2:Hero of The Federation, & Paparazzi. She has a new movie coming out with wrestler John Cena called The Marine.

She was named #43 on the Maxim Hot 100 List in 2005. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota like fellow LLLOTW Rachael Leigh Cook. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her on this season’s Nip/Tuck.

Jill Wagner Can Gnaw On Me Anytime…..

Hi Y’all,
Lately I’ve been watching the new Spike TV series- Blade:The Series. It is a tv spinoff of the successful Blade film trilogy. Replacing Wesley Snipes in the Blade role is Kirk “Sticky” Jones. In the first few episodes, he was aping Wesley’s take, but later on fully makes Blade his own. He is doing a pretty good version of Blade now as it gets toward the end of the season.

The larger season arc concerns Blade’s struggles against the vampire House Of Cthon. Cthon’s Detroit interests are led by the vampire Marcus Van Scriver/Neil Jackson (named after the comic book artist Ethan Van Scriver). He is working on a special project which the pureblood vampires think will take away their weaknesses to Garlic/Sunlight, but in reality he is working on a virus that will kill all the pure bloods, while leaving all the other vamps alive in a palace coup.

He is assisted by his lovely vicious henchwoman, Chase. Played by the sexy Australian actress, Jessica Gower, she is the epitome of the femme fatale who would turn on you in a minute.

Blade’s own henchman, Shen (Nelson Lee), is a guy who is looking for the vamps who hurt his sister. He assists Blade in the war on the vamps as his tech support.

But if there is a focal character in the series outside of Blade, it is the newly turned vampire Krista (Jill Wagner). Blade has her being a double agent inside House Cthon. He keeps her own the straight and narrow by giving her some of his serum to suppress the bloodlust, but it has become increasingly difficult for her to fight her vamp side. All the plots are leading to a head in the next week or two heading up to the season finale.

The series has had a more mature feel to it than most tv horror shows. It has more of a The Shield or Sopranos feel to it than a Buffy TVS feel. It has had more mature language, violence and even a nude scene from Jessica Gower. It is written/created by the famous comic book writers Geoff Johns & David Goyer. I hope that it definitely gets renewed come renewal time……

Hi-Yo Silver, Away……

Hi Y’all,
Anybody that reads this blog knows my love for western comics and westerns in general. So it is my great pleasure to hear that Dynamite Entertainment is bringing back the big gun of western characters- The Lone Ranger- this week in a new ongoing comic series. So far it looks to be a great take on the masked lawman!

When I was just a little dude, I used to watch the old TV show every Saturday morning with my older brother whenever it would come on and enjoy the hell out of it. I even had the full Lone Ranger cowboy getup that I used to run around in one halloween. Let me tell you, nothing is more frightening than a 4 year old me dressed up as TLR riding the Black Lab dog like a horse and calling him Silver….

But I digress, anyway check out the preview for it they have up:

OMG, They Deballed JR…….

Hi Y’all,
The sheer amount of stuff that looks interesting to me means that I almost always have a backlog of things that I need to catch/catch up on, and one of those was Nip/Tuck. Now, my bro and my friends have all told me that it would be a show that was right up my alley, but until last night I never had a chance to just sit down and watch the show. They were right, if the season 3 premiere episode was any indication. It will be a series I will have to start watching now.

Some of my favorite moments:
1. JR (Larry Hagman) coming in for a ball transplant….
2. Captain Lockley (Tracy Scoggins) as a 1/2 of a mother-daughter tag-team on Dr. Doom.
3. Brooke Shields as a psychologist who Dr. Doom also nails.
4. The pretty girl with the lobster hands who seemed to be the most well adjusted person in the whole episode.
5. Dr. Doom worrying about if he was in love with his partner. Heh.

They were right….

Luthor’s Lovely Lady Of The Week #13- Tricia Helfer…

Hi Y’all,

This Week’s LLLOTW is Battlestar Galactica’s resident siren, Tricia Helfer. Although having a few small roles before BSG, she really burst on the scene with the new reimaging of the show. She gives a great portrayal of the Cylon who seduces humanity’s most intelligent scientist to become complicit in genocide of his own people. She is doing wonderful work in the show.

Hailing from Canada, the model turned actress, was discovered outside a movie theater by a Ford Model talent scout. She went on to win Ford’s Supermodel of the World contest in 1992.

She is a former Victoria’s Secret model, 5′10 with reputed 34-24-34 measurements. She was named #83 on Maxim’s Hot 100 of 2005 and also again made the list in 2006 at #95.

That’s Not A Knife, This Is A Knife….

Hi Y’all,

Last night I watched the Australian movie Wolf Creek on Netflix. It was a creepy little movie. Three friends go on a siteseeing tour of the Outback to see a gigantic meteor crater. While there their car dies and they are saved by a bushman that comes along. Or are they?

Their savior turns out to be a serial killer who has been doing this for a while. The movie starts with a slow build before it starts to get seriously creepy. The Outback is like a whole other character in this movie. John Jarrett give the killer,Mick Taylor, a creepiness that will put off tourists to Oz for a while.

Cassandra McGrath, the main protagonist of the 3 tourists gives a great performance. She looks a lot like Kiera Knightly. I hope she comes to the states and makes it big, cause she is a sexy lady. I look forward to seeing more work out of her.

And allegedly, this movie was based around a true story….

You Know, It Takes Balls Just To Name The Show That…..

Hi Y’all,

Now normally I hate reality TV with a passion, but Gene Simmon’s Family Jewels, has hooked me alright. It is a new show following the great Kiss rocker and his dealings with his family on A & E. His family is one of the highlights of the show.

His son Nick, a likeable kid who is looking to get into the family business himself, is the resident smartass of the show always ready with a quip to put the old man in his place. Sophie, the daughter is the source of much of Gene’s consternation, as she is coming into her own with all the boys starting to come around.

Sophie looks like she will grow into a stunner like her mother, Playmate Shannon Tweed, and a lot of the shows humor grows out of the contrast of that and Gene of all people being the over protective father. All in all a good show…..
